Ezekiel Elliott is dealing a hamstring issue that has sidelined him for a few days. The Dallas Cowboys are clearly exercising caution with their fourth overall pick to ensure that he will be healthy to start the season. Elliott is going to be fine, but if he were seriously injured which back up running back should you own?

Darren McFadden signed with the Cowboys last year to be the back up to Joseph Randle. After the first five weeks of the season, McFadden took over as the starter and did very well. He had 1,417 total yards on 279 total touches and three touchdowns.

Darren McFadden, who has always been an injury risk, actually played in all 16 games last season and proved that the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line can make anyone fantasy relevant. Joseph Randle even had 401 total yards and four touchdowns.

This offseason, before drafting Ezekiel Elliott, the Cowboys signed free agent Alfred Morris. In his rookie year, Morris had over 1,600 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Each year following his rookie season he had less yards and touchdowns, including 751 rushing yards and one touchdown last season.

The Washington Redskins were a terrible team in Alfred Morris’ second and third seasons, and the team had 1,241 total rushing yards total last season. I believe that had the Redskins been better, that would have given Morris a lot more opportunities to rush the ball and he would have maintained having at least 1,000 rushing yards and at least eight touchdowns.

The Dallas Cowboys are in a position to continue having great success in the running game. Again, Ezekiel Elliott is going to be fine and he will be starting the season as the starter. On draft day, anyone that drafts Elliott needs to draft Alfred Morris to be his back up. Darren McFadden is already hurt and has no timetable to return to practice.

Alfred Morris behind that offensive line and in a good offense would have been dominant this season had the Cowboys not drafted Ezekiel Elliott. If Elliott isn’t effective or gets hurt, you’ll thank yourself for drafting and hanging onto Morris.
